TUESDAY BLAST FROM THE PRESIDENT:

We had a turnout of 16 people at the Annual Meeting on Saturday, June 25 and a big thank you to those who stayed through the long process of going over our bylaws.

The Executive Committee will be meeting this week to plan the programs for the coming 6 months. If you have any suggestions, please let me know.

I would like to repeat what I said in my closing remarks so you can hold me to what I said if nothing happens:

Help us find out what it is you want from the LWVFRA. What would you like our local league to do; what do you hope to receive from being a member of LWVFRA?

I hope to have a weekly update of what we and other leagues are doing. Remember as a member of LWVFRA you are also a member of LWV-VA and LWV.org and they each offer workshops, training, and other opportunities. Look for those to be posted on our website.

We want to have the Board meetings on Zoom so everyone can participate.

Book discussions 4 times a year: starting with “Fascism” by Madeleine Albright and “First Principles” by Thomas E. Ricks.

We wanted to make everyone’s dues payable by June 30th. That makes it much easier on the Treasurer and you – because you won’t have to depend on a renewal notice when you are due – you will just know.

August 26 is Women’s Equality Day. Marie has reserved a space at the Stafford Farmer’s Market so that we might let everyone know who we are and what we stand for.  This is more important now that ever!

Since I want to make getting people out to vote a priority – Marie has suggested us making a list of organizations that will offer rides to the polls.

LWV-VA FALL WORKSHOP HERE IN FREDERICKSBURG in September. Let’s have a GREAT showing of all our members!!

A Civics Curriculum that we can offer to the public and to those who will listen. It is important to register people – but the big thing is to get them out to the polls so their vote can be counted.

A one-word statement to counter “My one vote won’t count.” Perhaps a contest to find just the right words?!

Bookmarks with our calendar on them.

Celebrate Women’s International Day in March.

Find a way to get donated copies of the Constitution to pass out.

Lucretia’s suggestion of furthering the defunct Women’s Forum with A Women’s Symposium.

A member to keep up with the papers and write or gather writings for Letters to the Editor or the Op Ed page.

Attendance at County or City meetings. Donna Blalock supplied us with Observer pins BUT – now we can watch the meetings from the comfort of our own kitchens.  Watch and keep us informed as to what is going on in our districts.

We need to get involved in what is going on.

Let’s get to know each other. Whenever possible let’s meet for tea or just conversation.  I don’t know many of you and would like to get to know you.  I can’t ask you to sign up for something if I don’t know who you are!

Let’s celebrate with each other the highs and lows of our lives. We are all in this together – LET’S HAVE SOME FUN AMIDST THE BRAMBLES.

We have certain duties to ourselves, to our localities and to those around us. This is the time to get involved.

I took this Presidency because there were some people who wanted to see us dissolve.  We cannot do that at this important time in our Country’s history.

Now is the time to stand up, speak up, do whatever we can to help keep our democracy and our LWVFRA ALIVE.

If you noticed from the Nominating Report sent to all members for the meeting, we do not have several key positions filled. Please thoughtfully consider becoming involved. There is so much we can do without being “in charge” of it. Virtually attend some of the local boards, be on the Voter Services committee to register voters. Write articles. Ever written a grant? We can use some folks willing to tackle this. Like making phone calls? Planning gatherings?

Please join me and step up and sign up to be an active part of this organization.

Democracy dies in the darkness.” The Washington Post

Thank you and I will be back with our future calendar next Tuesday!!!!
