Who we are
The LWVFRA-SC is a student-led, student-driven League organization that connects University of Mary Washington students with hands-on civic engagement opportunities.
We work independently on campus while collaborating with the broader League of Women Voters of the Fredericksburg Area to strengthen democracy in our region.
We’re building a community of informed, active citizens ready to lead change on campus and beyond.

Educational Workshops & Forums
Host events on voting rights, democratic processes, and civic responsibility open to all students

University of Mary Washington undergraduate students are welcome to join.

Getting Involved
Student Council Only Membership (No Fee)
Participate in all LWVFRA-SC campus activities and events. Join committees, attend workshops, forums, and voter registration drives. Vote in Student Council meetings. No membership fee required.
Dual Membership (Optional)
Includes all Student Council membership benefits PLUS:
- Full membership in LWVFRA, LWV Virginia, and LWV National
- Participate in broader League activities beyond campus
- Access to state and national League resources and advocacy opportunities
- Membership continues after graduation (renewable annually)
- Connect with established League members for mentorship
- Annual membership dues apply (starting at $20, you choose your contribution level)
Student Leadership
The LWVFRA-SC is run entirely by students. We elect officers annually and create committees based on our priorities and interests.

Committee Opportunities:
Form or join committees focused on areas you care about—voter education, community outreach, issue studies, event planning, and more.

Our Partnership with LWVFRA
The Student Council operates as a direct subsidiary of the League of Women Voters of the Fredericksburg Area, giving students access to:
- Experience and Expertise: Learn from established League members with decades of civic engagement experience
- Regional Impact: Participate in voter education and community outreach across Fredericksburg, Caroline, King George, Spotsylvania, and Stafford
- Resources and Training: Access professional development, advocacy tools, and educational materials
- Monthly League Meetings: Student Council members are invited to attend LWVFRA monthly meetings (second Monday of each month at 6pm)
- Collaborative Projects: Work alongside community members on initiatives that strengthen democracy
This partnership ensures student voices contribute to meaningful civic work while developing skills for lifelong democratic participation.

FAQs
Do I have to pay to join?
No. Student Council Only membership is completely free. Dual membership with the broader League is optional and includes additional benefits (starting at $20/year).
Do I need to major in political science or government?
Not at all. Students from all majors are welcome. Civic engagement connects to every field.
Is the League affiliated with a political party?
No. The League of Women Voters is strictly nonpartisan and does not support or oppose any political party or candidate.
How much time is required?
That’s up to you. Attend as many meetings and events as your schedule allows. Active members attend at least 50% of regular meetings.
What happens to my membership after graduation?
Student Council membership ends upon graduation. However, if you have Dual Membership with LWVFRA, that membership continues and is renewable annually, allowing you to stay involved in the community as an alumnus.

All student participants are subject to the Honor Code.
